England's great start to the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign has left many questioning the future of Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

The former West Ham United midfielder was one of England's brighter lights at a disappointing World Cup, but his absence in the victories over Bulgaria and Switzerland have left critics and fans calling for his omission on a regular basis.

Lampard's goal-scoring record from midfield is second-to-none, with the player scoring more than 20 goals in six consecutive seasons.

Steven Gerrard's performance in the central midfield role on Tuesday night was acclaimed by the British media, but the quality possessed by Lampard means that he is still an integral part of Fabio Capello's plans.

Several former managers have played the pair together in central midfield, while Capello was keen to persist with Gerrard behind striker Wayne Rooney in a second striker position.

With the Liverpool skipper now playing in the centre of the pitch, the duo might need to play alongside each other if both are involved.

"My first instinct is to get forward, but I have no problems playing like that. At Chelsea there are times when I cannot bomb on and with England the manager [Capello] lets me know emphatically when he doesn't want me to get forward," Lampard has said in the past.

Chelsea fans will hope their dependable 32-year-old is fit for the clash against the Hammers at Upton Park on Saturday after undergoing a hernia operation during the international break.

Capello has always said that players will be picked on form, and the Stamford Bridge star will knuckle down at club level and force his way back into the Three Lions starting XI.
